Ensō means circle. Ensō is a circle that is hand drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. Usually, a person draws the ensō in one fluid, expressive stroke. Once the ensō is drawn, one does not change it. It evidences the character of its creator and the context of its creation in a brief, continuous period of time. It is characterized by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics.
Ensō, in the school of zen buddhism, symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance and emptiness. Ensō, are symbols of teaching, reality, enlightenment, and a myriad of things in between. Seemingly perfect in their continuity, balance, and sense of completeness, and yet often irregular in execution. Ensō is at the same time the most fundamentally simple and the most complex form. JTP Brandinghouse fully embraces this.
